The Race for Water catamaran travels around the world to save the planet
The Race for Water odyssey started off on Sunday 9th of April 2017 from the Lorient seaport in France. The catamaran is heading for a 5 year world tour and its next stop will be in the Bermudes for the Ameica’s Cup catamaran racing event. The tour will include multiple highlighted stops in order to widen its audience and raise awareness about the slow obstruction of the oceans. Race for Water is completely dedicated to the protection of the oceans and always engages in special expeditions which only goals are the cleansing of the waters from waste and the preservation of their natural wealth. This time’s expedition uses a green catamaran to stop the expansion of plastic waste.
Marco Simeoni, the president of the Race for Water foundation estimates the plastic waste per 5 kilos of fish to be up to 1 kilos of plastic which is the equivalent of a waste truck’s content being thrown in the oceans every minute.
The Race for Water ship, formely called PlanetSolar, is 35 meters long. Its surface is 540 m² of solar panels. PlanetSolar was the first green catamaran to achieve a world tour in 2012. Now owned by the Race for Water company, the catamaran is entirely made to save the environment. The ship itself has been greatly modified to save energy and gain autonomy. The foundation has invested more than 5 million dollars to increase the autonomy of the catamaran. It now totally works with solar energy and is towed by a kite. As for the catamaran sails, the kite is a kind of sail traction that makes the ship move with the force of the wind.
The Race for Work catamaran will stop in Tokyo for the Olympics of 2020 and in Dubaï for the universal exhibition.
